Neck pain can have a variety of causes

  • Muscle Strains - Often caused by overuse, such as being too slouched over your computer or phone. Research shows that reading in bed or gritting your teeth can cause strained neck muscles.
  • Worn Neck Joints - Similar to other joints in your body, your neck bones can wear down with age, forming bone spurs that can affect joint movement and cause pain.
  • Nerve Compression - Herniated disks or bone spurs in your neck can cause pain in the nerves that branch out from the spinal cord.
  • Injuries - Car accidents or colliding with another person can result in whiplash, which often strains the neck muscles.
  • Diseases - Arthritis, meningitis, or cancer can cause neck pain.

How to Treat Neck Pain at Home Before a Chiropractor Appointment

Cold Compress

A cold compress can be used to relieve neck pain. Apply the cold compress to the affected area for 20 minutes and then rest for 40 minutes. After resting, you can reapply the compress as needed.

Pillow Support

Neck pain may be caused by the pillow you’re sleeping on. Finding the right pillow to support your neck while sleeping is crucial to keeping the pain at bay. Foam and latex-filled pillows will properly support your neck throughout the night’s sleep, which can relieve any aches and pains. Pillows that are feather-filled don’t offer as much stability, as the feathers shift throughout the night.

Exercise

When the neck remains in the same position for a period of time, the muscles can tighten up. Neck exercises can help to prevent from muscles tensing up and causing neck pain. Do neck exercises on a regular basis to relieve stiffness.

Hydration

Drinking plenty of water is crucial to the health of your neck and spine. Without the proper amount of water, a disc can become dry and brittle, leading to back and neck pain.

Magnesium

The body needs magnesium to help with muscle contraction and relaxation. If you’re struggling with neck pain, a magnesium supplement can lessen your recovery time and allow the muscles to heal properly.

Posture

Poor posture can increase the chances of an injury or other conditions like muscle strains and pinched nerves. Improving posture will reduce your neck pain and prevent the chance of future issues.
